What is a recorded statement and should I give one?

A recorded statement is a formal interview where you describe what happened in your loss, recorded by the carrier and added to your claim file. Most policies require you to cooperate with the carrier's investigation, which generally includes giving a statement when asked. The risk is not whether to give one, but how. Statements made before you have reviewed your own documentation are easy to misremember. Speculative answers ('I think the leak started two weeks ago') get treated as facts later. A casual side comment becomes a quotable claim record. How to prepare. Before the call, review your timeline. Write down what you actually know versus what you are guessing. Have your photos and receipts in front of you. If you do not know the answer, say so. 'I do not remember' is a complete answer. We help clients prepare for these calls, particularly for any claim involving disputed cause.
